Redesigning the book cover of the novel Life of Pi by Yann Martel, I tried to create a dynamic image that captured the harrowing journey of the protagonist. By surrounding the boy with the image of a menacing tiger, whose stripes turn into the waves of the ocean, I showed the central struggles of the protagonist as well as giving hint to the novel’s overreaching “circle-of-life” theme. I used gouache, a medium I am very fond of, to paint the pattern details of the tiger’s stripes and waves, and used a vibrant orange, blue and white against a black background for ultimate contrast and visual impact.
